In this decisive decade, actions taken by markets, governments and citizens will determine liveability on our planet for the next century. With this in mind, Philea aims to surface synergies on the topic of climate across all of its areas of work. Philanthropy has a key role to play in finding and supporting solutions – and there are solutions – to this threat. The climate emergency touches on virtually every area that philanthropy works in, with health, migration, poverty, and sustainability as just a few examples. By viewing Philea’s work through a climate lens, we hope to empower philanthropy to make a real difference in this crisis. We also pay attention to how the climate emergency interacts with Philea’s other 2 cross-cutting focus areas: democracy and equality.DemocracyAddress threats to democracy_c4a8b388-248e-11ed-836f-aa59f282ea003.2Democracies across the world have faced unprecedented challenges in recent years ‒ from narrowing civic space, to curtailment of freedom and equality, to the spread of misinformation. Philanthropy has a key role to play in addressing these threats through working to widen and deepen civic participation, and joining forces with partners to build trust and legitimacy. With its convening power, ability to take risks and roots at the local level, philanthropy is well placed to make a difference. To support our members in this, Philea aims to highlight the theme of democracy across all of its areas of work by making connections and identifying synergies in this area. We also pay attention to how democracy interacts with Philea’s other 2 cross-cutting focus areas: climate and equality.EqualitySupport equality_c4a8b414-248e-11ed-836f-aa59f282ea003.3Philea members have pointed to striving for equality as an urgent issue that must be addressed by philanthropy now and in the coming years. Rising economic inequality has exacerbated virtually all of the problems philanthropy works on. The most disadvantaged face the worst consequences of global threats such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the climate emergency. And when it comes to guaranteeing all members of society equal rights and opportunities, there is still much work to be done. The sector can use its resources, including its networks, experience and expertise to support equality. Philea aims to facilitate this by highlighting the theme of equality across all of its areas of work to surface new insights and pathways for joint efforts. We also pay attention to how equality interacts with Philea’s other 2 cross-cutting focus areas: climate and democracy.
