By 2016 there were approximately 10 state CDOs, and there are approximately 25 state CDOs or equivalent positions across the country today. States are recognizing that data is a strategic asset and they have great potential to unlock it for public good -- for example to integrate data to better serve high need safety net users or to respond more quickly to natural and public health disasters. As the role has grown, CDO responsibilities, reporting structures, authority, and resources vary state by state.Beeck CenterThe Beeck Center will help formalize the duties and responsibilities of this role, recruit additional CDO candidates to states, inspire governors to create and elevate the CDO role, and lift up successful state data innovations and document them in toolkits that can be replicated across this network and the nation.CDO PartnersBringing CDOs and partners together. She is the Director of the Digital Service Collaborative at the Georgetown Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation and previously served as the Deputy U.S. Chief Technology Officer. Before launching this project, Cori led the principles and practices work for Code for America and was a Mozilla fellow. From 2013-2017 at the White House, Cori advised the U.S. Chief Technology Officer and led the team’s work to build a more digital, open, and collaborative government including helping to stand up and support the U.S. Digital Service, 18F and the Presidential Innovation Fellows. Cori also led the U.S. government’s development and implementation of commitments to the Open Government Partnership. Previously, Cori was an attorney at the U.S. National Archives, and before that, at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press where she worked on free press, free expression, and freedom of information issues. She has consulted on civic tech, tech policy, press freedom and freedom of information issues with leaders in countries around the world and teaches First Amendment law as an adjunct professor. She is the President of the Board of Directors for Muckrock, a nonprofit, collaborative news site in the U.S. that promotes transparency for an informed democracy, and also serves on the Advisory Council for the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law.Vandhana RaviPROGRAM ASSOCIATE, DATA + DIGITAL -- Vandhana works as the Program Associate for the Beeck Center’s data for social good portfolio. She is a graduate of Brown University where she honed her interest in social impact and justice, studying sociology and poetry, with a concentration on digital justice. She worked with the Rhode Island Office of Innovation, Providence CityArts, and the Urban Design Collective to help communities leverage technology to empower themselves. She also interned at UNICEF’s Innovation Lab where she helped research and design wearable technology to improve maternal and child healthcare systems in rural India.Nerissa LemonSTUDENT ANALYST -- Why Beeck? I’m excited to work at the Beeck Center because it affords me the opportunity to help others in a real, visible way while at the same time allowing me to hone my technical skills. The Beeck Center’s mission on student led social impact is an ethos that I’m thrilled to be a part of. What issues are you most passionate about? I’m passionate about working on improving the lives and situations for sexual assault victims. I’d love to see a better, more compassionate healthcare system that seamlessly integrates with the justice system for all sexual assault survivors. Who inspires you? The internal strength and grace of all womxn, and survivors, continually inspires me and makes me strive be a better person, and do good more recklessly. Tyler KleykampFELLOW, DATA + DIGITAL -- Tyler Kleykamp (pronounced CLAY – CAMP) was the State of Connecticut’s first Chief Data Officer (CDO) and one of the first state Chief Data Officers in the nation. In his role as CDO Tyler led Connecticut’s efforts to use data to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of state programs, policies, and services. He oversaw data analytics and transparency master planning, leveraging open source tools and technology to create cost effective and scalable solutions to solve some of Connecticut’s most intractable data challenges. He is the creator of the DataOps for Government framework, which applies Lean continuous process improvement and agile software development techniques to data and analytics pipelines in government. Tyler spearheaded the passage of several pieces of innovative legislation enabling Connecticut to enhance data integration and formulated the first ever State Data Plan. Tyler also served as Chair of the Connecticut Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) Council, as well as the State GIS Coordinator. Throughout his career in government spanning four different administrations, Tyler has led numerous initiatives to improve data and information sharing including: emergency management and disaster response, transparency and accountability during the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and land use and economic development activities. In 2016, Tyler was the recipient of the U.S. Open Data Institutes’ “Open Data Pioneer” award and was named a “Data and IT Innovator” by Route Fifty. In 2019, Tyler was named one of Government Technology’s “Top 25 Doers, Dreamers, and Drivers.”Denice RossFELLOW, DATA + DIGITAL -- Denice Ross is a Fellow-in-Residence at Georgetown’s Beeck Center, where she supports the Schmidt Futures data collaboratives portfolio, around issues such as disasters, opioids/addiction, Census 2020, climate change, policing, and workforce. She comes to the Beeck Center from New America, where she studied climate security and the power of networks to advance progress on big challenges. As a Presidential Innovation Fellow in the Obama administration, she co-founded the White House Police Data Initiative to increase transparency and accountability in the wake of Ferguson, and worked with the Department of Energy on crowdsourcing private-sector data to improve community resilience in disaster-impacted areas. Before moving to the DC area, she served as Director of Enterprise Information for the City of New Orleans, where she established their open data initiative, now recognized as one of the most successful in the country. Prior to government, Denice co-directed the Data Center, a non-profit data intermediary. After Hurricane Katrina, she collaborated with Brookings to track the city’s recovery through the definitive New Orleans Index. She brought a data-driven approach to numerous post-Katrina community planning initiatives, and co-founded the first new childcare center after the storm. Denice holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Arizona, where she was a Goldwater Scholar.Nate WongINTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR -- Nate specializes in creating lasting social change by both mobilizing talent to defy prevailing orthodoxies, while also helping shape the very systems that impede a prosperous and equitable world for all. He has experience in the private, social, and public sectors, working in over 10 different countries, helping clients maximize their social impact. As Interim Executive Director, Nate manages the day-to-day operations of the Beeck Center, helping to mobilize talent for social impact at scale, connecting students of all ages with leading-edge thought leaders. Nate’s experience has focused on city innovation and helping marketplace leaders utilize their core competencies to maximize their positive social impact. Nate helped launch and direct two social impact units at Deloitte Consulting and more recently at Boston Consulting Group’s non-profit, the Centre for Public Impact in the US. He has spoken and conducted research on the connection between social impact and talent development. Nate has advised over 50 social entrepreneurs through his pioneering work with Halcyon, a premier social enterprise incubator in DC, and has served as a mentor with Obama’s flagship Young African Leaders Initiative and Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative with the State Department. Nate serves as a Fellow at the Centre for Public Impact, a foundation of Boston Consulting Group.Ori HofferDIRECTOR OF INFLUENCE + COMMUNICATIONS -- Ori has been a communications professional for over 25 years, directing strategies for non-profits, the federal government, and media organizations. With a background in both journalism and digital media, he has delivered award-winning features and unique content that engages multiple audiences. His early career included stops at NPR and AOL, where he developed innovative ways to combine information from diverse sources into interactive features. Living in Park City, Utah, Ori returned to traditional media, producing and hosting local radio and TV programs that covered everything from politics to bobsled to science. Returning to DC, he directed social media for the General Services Administration, and managed communications for 18F. Most recently, he oversaw Gannett’s 2018 midterm election project. Ori is an active soccer player and youth coach, as well as an Alumni Student Recruiter for the University of Michigan. He lives in Arlington with his daughter.Molly PorterFINANCE + ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGER -- As Finance and Administrative Manager, Molly drives operations and finance to streamline processes and coordinate the Beeck Center efforts with the larger Georgetown University operations. Previously, Molly served as Senior Director of Project Management at the Case Foundation, leading collaboration and innovation across teams and subject matters to strategize, develop and execute the Foundation’s Inclusive Entrepreneurship & Impact Investing programs, communications and operations. Outside of work, Molly is busy pursuing her passions for travel, cooking, hiking, spin, yoga and learning.Céline ChieuDIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATE -- Céline manages and executes the Beeck Center’s digital communications efforts across all platforms from web to social media. Céline is a strategic storyteller for the multiple portfolios and projects at the Beeck Center. Céline has a strong background in marketing and communications for different brands across various industries. She joins the team from The Ohio State University, where she executed digital campaigns on social media platforms as well as paid campaigns on Google Ads and Bing Ads. Céline managed and created content for social media platforms including: Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and Instagram. During her time at Ohio State, she created digital content in the form of new articles on Ohio State’s website. As an Ohio State graduate, Céline used her Strategic Communications and Design degree to elevate the status of multiple online programs at Ohio State within the College of Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medicine. She believes in the power of life-long learning and how it can create new opportunities.
