From humble beginnings and diverse life experiences, she has been making a positive impact throughout her life. Kim’s variety of strong qualities have combined to make her uniquely qualified to serve as Hilton Head Island’s next mayor and effectively carry forward our world-renowned hometown to new heights. Born in historic Salisbury, North Carolina, known as a small, working-class city, and home of the cherry flavored soft drink Cheerwine, Kim’s family moved east to Fayetteville, NC for her middle school and high school years. It was here where she fell in love with the nearby Atlantic shoreline of North Myrtle Beach which her family frequented as often as possible on summer weekends. “I had a very early love for sand between my toes,” smiles Kim.
<Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Organization">

<Role>

</Role></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Organization">
E.E. Smith High was esteemed throughout the Carolina’s as a Black high school known for its scholarship, its athletics and its marching band which has appeared in parades and events across the nation. “When I entered high school it was the early days of integration and bussing,” Kim recalls. “The majority of our school was African American and I learned firsthand the importance of tolerance and equity. Those lessons have helped shape my life and were extremely beneficial in the corporate world as well as more recently as executive director of our Boys & Girls Club.” Kim’s engaging personality shined brightly at her new high school where she became captain of the cheerleading squad, played varsity golf and earned scholarships to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
<Role>

</Role></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Organization">

At the University of North Carolina Kim worked toward her B.A. in Communications while joining Alpha Delta Pi sorority and learning about broadcasting while working part time at WUNC (Public Radio’s flagship station covering the The Research Triangle Region of North Carolina).
<Role>

</Role></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Organization">

<Role>

</Role></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Organization">

<Role>

</Role></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Organization">

A highlight of Kim’s college years was a summer program at Disney World in Florida learning about customer service and serving as a teaching assistant.
<Role>

</Role></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Organization">

Following graduation Kim jumped head first into the corporate world with a firm which was merged into McKesson Corporation, a $200 billion health information technology company that distributes pharmaceuticals, media supplies and care management tools. I am talking about vacationers who will eat out and shop locally and not stay cooped up in their hotels. Working together in partnership these organizations along with our business community, town government and chamber of commerce can maximize their value for our resident’s quality of life and our tourism economy... *Arts *Culture *Heritage *Entertainment *Recreation I have a strong track record in leadership of advocating for and implementing arts, cultural, history, entertainment and recreational initiatives. This is exemplified by my YES votes for: • Funding and hiring the Director of the Town of Hilton Head Island Office of Cultural Affairs • Formation of the town’s Arts and Culture Strategic Planning Committee and last year, the Culture & Arts Advisory Committee • Town funding to hire an Executive Director for the Mitchelville Preservation Project • Formation of the town’s Gullah Geechee Land and Cultural Preservation Task Force • Town funding for a Director of Gullah Geechee Land and Cultural Preservation • Building the Shelter Cove and Coligny Celebration parks which include playgrounds and concert stages • Establishing a town sponsored public art program • Building of the new Hilton Head Island Rec. Center • Development of the Regional Heritage Cultural Tourism Task Force • Building miles of bike paths and continuing to fund their safety improvements • Building of the Rowing & Sailing Center As Mayor, I will ensure that continued support for our cultural and recreational assets is maintained and grown to continue to foster community and showcase our island’s vibrant heritage.</OtherInformation><Objective>
Parks &
