From humble beginnings and diverse life experiences, she has been making a positive impact throughout her life. Kim’s variety of strong qualities have combined to make her uniquely qualified to serve as Hilton Head Island’s next mayor and effectively carry forward our world-renowned hometown to new heights. Born in historic Salisbury, North Carolina, known as a small, working-class city, and home of the cherry flavored soft drink Cheerwine, Kim’s family moved east to Fayetteville, NC for her middle school and high school years. It was here where she fell in love with the nearby Atlantic shoreline of North Myrtle Beach which her family frequented as often as possible on summer weekends. “I had a very early love for sand between my toes,” smiles Kim.Hilton Head[To be named]E.E. Smith High SchoolKim remembers her years at Fayetteville’s E.E. Smith High School as significant in shaping many of her current perspectives about life and diversity. Founded in 1927, her high school was named in honor of Ezekiel Ezra Smith. An African American born prior to the Civil War, Smith was a prominent educator and newspaper editor, and was named a U.S. Ambassador in the late 1800s. E.E. Smith High was esteemed throughout the Carolina’s as a Black high school known for its scholarship, its athletics and its marching band which has appeared in parades and events across the nation. “When I entered high school it was the early days of integration and bussing,” Kim recalls. “The majority of our school was African American and I learned firsthand the importance of tolerance and equity. Those lessons have helped shape my life and were extremely beneficial in the corporate world as well as more recently as executive director of our Boys & Girls Club.” Kim’s engaging personality shined brightly at her new high school where she became captain of the cheerleading squad, played varsity golf and earned scholarships to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[To be named]University of North CarolinaAt the University of North Carolina Kim worked toward her B.A. in Communications while joining Alpha Delta Pi sorority and learning about broadcasting while working part time at WUNC (Public Radio’s flagship station covering the The Research Triangle Region of North Carolina).[To be named]Alpha Delta Pi[To be named]WUNC[To be named]Disney WorldA highlight of Kim’s college years was a summer program at Disney World in Florida learning about customer service and serving as a teaching assistant.[To be named]McKesson CorporationFollowing graduation Kim jumped head first into the corporate world with a firm which was merged into McKesson Corporation, a $200 billion health information technology company that distributes pharmaceuticals, media supplies and care management tools. With McKesson she was tasked with a variety of responsibilities, handling key management roles in both Atlanta and then in Hilton Head where she held a significant “off-site” position that involved both executive sales and acquisition and mergers research.[To be named]Steve LikinsKim met her husband, Steve, a Marriott sales executive, while on a Hilton Head Island vacation trip from Atlanta. She was more than happy to move to the Island because of her passion for golf. Kim’s grandfather was a golf professional who had emigrated from Scotland.[To be named]Island Friends LLCOn Hilton Head Kim started raising a family and then discovered her entrepreneurial talents in 2003 when she formed a publishing company with the goal of writing children’s books highlighting the island’s unique environment and inhabitants. The company, Island Friends LLC, marketed and sold more than 13,000 copies of two children’s books – the second of which “Charlie’s Special Friends” was a Southeastern Book Sellers Children’s Book of the Year nominee in 2004.[To be named]The SandboxIn 2005 Kim was a key participant in a grass roots organization which started The Sandbox — an educational, interactive children’s museum for families and visitors to the island. There is a wide variety of constituents within Kim’s district which has given her a broad perspective of resident issues and needs – certainly more so than others seeking the position of mayor.
