We promote values alignment, when prudent and feasible, through a variety of asset classes, investment vehicles and advocacy strategies, including cash, proxy voting, shareholder engagement, program-related investing, screening public equities, and private equity.Confluence PhilanthropyCP_2634f8fa-b2d5-11eb-bbd0-b1841e83ea00Confluence Philanthropy StaffDana LanzaPRESIDENT, CEO & CO-FOUNDER ~ Dana launched Confluence Philanthropy in August of 2009 as a special project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, after serving as the executive director of the Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA). While at EGA, Dana provided networking services to over 250 grantmaking organizations from across North America and Europe in 15 strategic funding areas. As director, Dana worked with the Rockefeller Family Fund, and led a then 20 year old EGA into an independent 501c3 organization. From 2009-2011 Dana served as the Program Director and Board Advisor at The Swift Foundation while launching Confluence. Swift makes grants internationally in the environment, indigenous and rural communities, and climate change initiatives. Swift is also deeply committed to mission-related investing. Prior to Philanthropy, Dana founded Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ), which brought free urban environmental education projects to more than 10,000 public school students, while employing hundreds of at risk youth as community advocates. She acted as a lead organizer in the closure of San Francisco’s infamous Hunters Point Power Plant; envisioning and raising funds to supplant it with the region’s first off-the-grid educational Eco Center. The Eco Center won the EPA’s National Environmental Justice Award after its grand opening in 2010. A recipient of several environmental awards, she has presented at Bioneers, the American Public Health Association, Investors’ Circle, and the European Foundation Center, among others. In 2005, she contributed to the Sierra Club Books anthology entitled Ecological Literacy: Educating Our Children for a Sustainable World. She was a fellow with the Donnella Meadows Leaders Fellowship Program in Systems Theory and the California Women’s Foundation Policy Institute. Beyond this, Dana has lived and worked among tribal people for much of her life. At 20 she lived at the village level among the Samburu (Maasai) for eight years. Twenty-four years later she undertook the Samburu’s traditional rites, becoming one of the few westerners ever initiated and a daughter of the L’Lorokgushu clan. More briefly Dana lived and worked with the Cheyenne River Lakota in South Dakota, and Kosovan Roma refugees in Europe. Dana speaks Swahili, Maa, and Spanish conversationally. A nomad in spirit, Dana lives in Fahnestock State Park in the Hudson Valley; and migrates between there, Brooklyn, and Kenya.Avery PaganC2C FELLOW ~ Avery Pagan is a C2C Fellow, working with Edie Farwell to support the Climate Solutions program at Confluence Philanthropy. Her experience includes over 4 years in financial technology, relationship management, and branded content. She has always been passionate about the intersection of active investing and sustainability and believes that we are on the precipice of a sea change in the asset management industry. Since she was young, Avery has explored her interests in wildlife and land conservation and more recently, sustainable food systems and mobile banking as catalysts for fundamental and durable social impact. In addition to her fellowship with Confluence, Avery is currently employed at SumZero, an online research and fundraising community for professional buyside investors and institutional capital allocators such as family offices, endowments, and foundations. She directly manages over 500 enterprise accounts and single-handedly launched SumZero’s podcast and video content channels in the summer of 2018. Outside of her work with SumZero, Avery is a founding member of the Next Gen Committee at the Trust for Public Land, where she worked closely with Confluence colleague Sarah DeNicola to develop junior membership tiers, committee objectives, partnerships, and event programming. In the fall of 2019, Avery was accepted to the Entrepreneur-in-Residence Program with the Baobab Network, a technology incubator and seed funder focused on African tech start-ups. Avery lived and worked in Cape Town for a month, developing a go-to-market strategy and pro forma financial statements with a Zambian digital payments/loan management start-up. Avery graduated from Williams College in 2016 where she studied History and Public Health. Her undergraduate summers were spent backpacking and sea kayaking in Alaska, doing sector research and evaluating ESG data sets for a New York-based family office, and supporting the corporate donor program for Ashoka in Washington, D.C. After spending the winter months skiing and exploring the Rocky Mountains, Avery is back in her hometown of New York City. She can usually be found biking to farmers markets, singing karaoke in Chinatown, or planning her next upstate camping trip.David EstradaMANAGING DIRECTOR ~ David is based in New York City and is passionate about the role of progressive philanthropy in addressing the world’s most critical challenges. He joined Confluence Philanthropy in 2017, after more than a decade leading successful partnerships with private foundations and CSR programs in the areas of global health, economic development and social entrepreneurship. Most recently, he served as Director of External Relations at KickStart International, a leading social enterprise which brings together philanthropy, innovative financing and the private sector to design and sell tools to help developing-world entrepreneurs lift themselves out of poverty. While there, he worked closely with foundations, family offices and corporations to build long-term and mission-aligned partnerships to scale KickStart’s B2B distribution model across 14 countries in Africa. David also led the communications strategy, overseeing online and print collateral development, as well as securing press coverage through the Clinton Global Initiative, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, CNBC Africa, Forbes and The Huffington Post, among others. Previously, David worked in global health at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative where he grew a portfolio of corporate funding partners. He has also managed a direct mail program at the Alliance for Lupus Research. David is a graduate of Cornell University and holds a certificate in non-profit management from UIC. In his free time, David can be found painting, practicing another language, or filling his passport with new stamps.Edie FarwellSENIOR PROGRAM DIRECTOR, CLIMATE SOLUTIONS ~ A global expert in accelerating economic, social and environmental sustainability, Edie supports key leaders across the business, non-profit, government and philanthropic sectors in developing and advancing high impact decarbonization initiatives. Leading Confluence Philanthropy's Climate Solutions Collaborative, Edie deploys a whole-systems approach to address the climate crisis, building strong cross-cultural and cross-sector international networks for environment, sustainability and social justice. Edie is known for founding the Sustainability Leaders Network, which she led as the Executive Director for ten years. Previously, she served as the Founding Director of the Donella Meadows Leadership Fellows Program of the Sustainability Institute, where she designed transformative leadership skills through a focus on systems thinking, reflective conversation, the discipline of vision, and coaching. As the Executive Director of the Association for Progressive Communications, Edie facilitated the early adoption of information and communications technologies through a global network of civil society organizations. This included leading international teams to provide internet services at several United Nations world conferences, including the 1992 U.N. Earth Summit in Brazil, the 1993 U.N. Human Rights Conference in Austria, and the 1995 U.N. Women’s Conference in China. Edie holds a B.A. in anthropology and environmental studies from Dartmouth College and a M.A in cultural and social anthropology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. She and her family were early pioneers of the Cobb Hill eco-village experiment in sustainable living in Hartland, Vermont. Edie is featured in the recent book They Didn't See Us Coming: The Hidden History of Feminism in the Nineties, and the co-author of Tibetan Art of Parenting.Jane OchsSENIOR MANAGER, OPERATIONS & FINANCE ~ Jane serves as the Senior Manager, Operations & Finance. In her role, she manages Confluence’s day-to-day finances, provides systems support across the organization, and coordinates our website and digital presence on multiple platforms. She has over a decade of experience providing bookkeeping services, administrative support, along with digital media and website management to numerous impact investors, venture capitalists, startup enterprises and NGOs. She has worked directly with fast paced executive teams across industries including legal, manufacturing, music, medical, and architecture. Before moving to the U.S. in 2014, Jane spent two years teaching English to students online across Asia. Prior to that, Jane worked as an accountant for Federal Express in the Philippines where she began her career. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the prestigious Philippine School of Business Administration. Jane loves to spend her free time hiking or camping in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and four children.Kryn DykemaSPECIAL PROJECTS COORDINATOR ~ Kryn is a recent graduate from Emory University where he studied Sustainability and Urban Development as a focus area of his Interdisciplinary Studies. Sustainability sits at the crux of almost every discipline, both academic and situational, and Kryn works to integrate a broad platform of theory to pursue a sustainable future. With a focus mainly on greenhouse gas accounting and abatement strategies, Kryn is active in efficiency promotion, energy analysis, and the facilitation of renewable energies. He works to advise and promote organizational sustainability and imagines a world with a clean, reliable electrical grid. Past work has included emission accounting and reduction advising for Emory University and pollutant collection and destruction for use in the carbon. He looks to draw upon a wide range of experience to create innovative and novel approaches to sustainability in practice. Kryn’s most recent work has been with Big Sky Resort in Montana where he is helping to launch a comprehensive sustainability mission for the ski area. His love for the mountains, and dedication to the preservation of Montana wilderness helps to re-imagine the environmental work of Big Sky Resort, and promote a sustainable future for the ski industry as a whole. He loves to ski, hike, bike, run and all other outdoor activities. Luckily, with a home-base in Montana, the outdoors are only a few steps away.Michael Francisco-McGuireCHIEF OPERATING OFFICER ~ As COO, Michael leads Confluence’s operational functions and day-to-day program management and is responsible for ensuring the financial health of the organization. He joined Confluence Philanthropy with over 20 years of experience in non-profit operations, events, and cross-sector partnership building. Michael is deeply committed to advancing racial justice, fighting climate change, and working at the intersection of the two. He is passionate about mission-aligned investing’s impact on the biggest issues of our time. Most recently, Michael served as Managing Director of Operations at iMentor, a nonprofit dedicated to mentoring students from low-income communities. He built the operational infrastructure needed to grow from 60 employees in NY to over 150 across the USA. Previously, Michael was one of the founding employees of The Climate Group, a global network of business, government, and non-profit organizations dedicated to expanding the clean energy economy. Initially responsible for member services, fundraising, and events, Michael helped The Climate Group grow to 150 employees across 5 continents, serving thousands of members. Then, as Director of Operations for The Climate Group’s New York office, he continued to implement both regional and international infrastructure critical to The Climate Group’s success. Michael holds an M.A. in Public Administration from New York University and is a dedicated father of two young children.Sarah DeNicolaSOCIAL EQUITY PROGRAM DIRECTOR ~ Sarah is the Social Equity Program Director at Confluence Philanthropy. Her experience includes over a decade of experience in nonprofit program development and management, network and coalition-building, research, and resource development. Sarah is passionate about creating a more equitable, just, and sustainable economy, and believes deeply in the power of the philanthropic sector to catalyze change. Most recently, Sarah developed philanthropic partnerships and raised private revenue at The Trust for Public Land (TPL) – a national nonprofit that creates parks and protects public land, and that places social equity, public health, and climate change at the center of its work. Prior to TPL, Sarah served as Program Manager at Confluence Philanthropy, helping to build programs, working groups, and cross-network collaborations. While in this role, she had the privilege to work with the Rainmakers Investment Collaborative, a group of investors committed to increasing investment in Native communities in the U.S. Southwest, as well as develop original publications and resources to support values-aligned investing. Sarah completed her Master of Public Administration at NYU Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service, with a specialization in International Development Policy and Management. She holds a B.A. in Diplomacy and World Affairs from Occidental College. Originally from San Francisco, she now lives in downtown Jersey City, NJ with her partner, and – when she’s lucky – the occasional furry foster animal. In her free time, she can be found honing her nascent photography skills, exploring trails and waterways, or simply spending time at a neighborhood park.Stephanie KoganMEMBER RELATIONS DIRECTOR ~ Stephanie has worked for over a decade in the field of values-aligned investing. Most recently she worked as the Manager of Special Projects for the Skopos Impact Fund, the impact investment fund of Anthos Asset Management. While there she helped to establish and then coordinate the Holding Company Exploration Working Group, which grew to over 50 members in the impact field. Previously, Stephanie raised capital for the Endeavor Catalyst Fund, which invests in entrepreneurs located in developing countries and economically challenged areas of the US. She gained additional experience in the impact sector while working for the Capital Markets team of Unitus Capital, where her experiences included investing in microfinance institutions throughout India, as well as raising capital for an affordable housing fund and a microfinance local currency debt fund. Earlier in her career, Stephanie worked in the debt capital markets group at Bear Stearns and the product marketing team at Credit Suisse. Stephanie earned an M.A. in International Affairs from the London School of Economics, and a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. In her spare time, Stephanie has volunteered with Business Council for Peace through which she traveled to Rwanda to mentor female genocide survivors who were starting small businesses. She worked to provide these entrepreneurs with business strategy and advice, and helped the business owners access capital to grow and scale their enterprises.
