The organization arose through a strategic relationship formed between the University at Buffalo and a local technology development company as a bridge between academia and industry. Since CUBRC's emergence in 1983, the company has grown from a small facilitator of research into a fully staffed, highly respected, scientifically crucial entity.Western New YorkWhile it is CUBRC's mission to make a significant, positive technological and economic impact on Western New York, the influences of our work stretch far beyond the Western NY region by making significant technology contributions to our nation as a whole.Dr. Charles TreanorIn its early years, CUBRC flourished under the guidance of our first director and president, renowned physicist Dr. Charles Treanor. The technologies and facilities of CUBRC date back to the late 1950s, playing a major role in the development testing of NASA's Gemini and Apollo space capsules; the U.S. Space Shuttle as well as many other vehicles that travel through Earth’s atmosphere at speeds much greater than that of sound.NASAAeronautics IndustryMore recently, CUBRC has continued its pioneering work in the area of aeronautics by expanding and enhancing our Hypervelocity research facilities into a unique, research and test capability available nowhere else in the world. In 1998, with new leadership and a mandate from our Board of Directors to expand our technology reach beyond aeronautics, CUBRC has made tremendous contributions in aiding the defense of our country against the effects of biological and chemical agents; helping to save lives on our nation’s highways; and helping people make critical decisions through the development of advanced information systems designed to provide crucial, actionable information extracted from massive, disparate sources of data.HumankindWhether ensuring the successful operation of vehicles that explore our solar system, improving clinical diagnostic instruments that test for diseases or saving lives on our streets and highways, CUBRC develops impactful technology of benefit to all humankind. Continually adapting and expanding, CUBRC remains invested in the power of technology, of first-rate facilities, and of innovative, highly motivated minds._14156f04-ee73-11e6-b19e-d9e0bee7bae2To combine innovative ideas and state-of-the-art technology to help solve some of the most critical and challenging problems facing our Defense, Intelligence and Homeland Security communities._14156fea-ee73-11e6-b19e-d9e0bee7bae2ProfessionalismCUBRC expects its officers, directors, employees, agents and other representatives to conduct themselves in a professional, ethical and legal manner consistently and without exception.EthicsLegalityCollaborationThe core of CUBRC's business involves working closely with its customers that demands adherence to a strict code of ethical conduct. CUBRC has a highly skilled staff to design and construct and instrument the models and test equipment employed in the LENS test facilities. The design staff has a full complement of design and analysis tools at their disposal to ensure the highest degree of accuracy and quality for hardware and model design work. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software capabilities include Siemens NX (Unigraphics), AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, and Inventor. Structural finite element capability features a full suite of ANSYS tools. Complementing our design capabilities is our ability to run structural/vibrational analysis to guarantee quality and safety prior to fabrication and installation of hardware. Most of the models and components for the tunnels are fabricated in house. Our machine shop comprises a group of highly skilled craft specialists in a fully equipped machine shop. Our experienced personnel create precision products in accordance with the exacting requirements of our customers. We use state of the art CNC lathes and mills to machine model and tunnel components to the highest quality standards. Inspection equipment is calibrated to standards traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and all materials, parts, and assemblies are inspected to rigid commercial and government specifications.
The construction, installation and calibration of the instrumentation used in our models are performed by specialists with combined experience totals of over 100 years. All of the high frequency thin-film heat transfer instrumentation we employ in our models is constructed, calibrated and installed in house. We employ high frequency piezoelectric and piezoresistive pressure transducers. Our force balances are designed and constructed in house using piezoresistive strain gages and piezoelectric strain gages and piezoelectric load cells. We have highly developed suites non-intrusive instrumentation to evaluate the aero-optic characteristics of seeker heads as well as instrumentation to obtain spectrographic and radiation measurements of the flowfield both ahead and in the shock layer of hypervelocity reentry vehicles.LENS Aerothermal/Aero-Optic and Propulsion Ground Test Facilities --
The cornerstone of CUBRC's experimental research and testing capability are the Large Energy National Shock (LENS) "tunnel" facilities. LENS is comprised of four separate test tunnels, along with their associated instrumentation and data recording and analysis capabilities. These facilities have been built on over 50 years of experience in creating and refining the performance of both shock and expansion tunnels. These world-class facilities represent a unique national resource used to solve many of the most challenging problems associated with the flight of high-speed vehicles traveling through both Earth and planetary atmospheres. Each individual LENS tunnel was designed and constructed by CUBRC to focus on the major supersonic and hypersonic flow regimes where aero-thermal, aero-optical and propulsion research and testing are required to develop advanced high-speed aerospace systems._1415794a-ee73-11e6-b19e-d9e0bee7bae2Medical CountermeasuresAdvance medical countermeasures._14157a4e-ee73-11e6-b19e-d9e0bee7bae24CUBRC's Biological and Medical Sciences GroupCUBRC's Biological and Medical Sciences Group serves the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the Biological Advanced Research and Development Authority and the Department of Defense to integrate drug development activities from discovery through advanced stages.
