She is the founder of the I-News Network, the nonprofit that merged with Rocky Mountain Public Media in 2013, the first such merger in the nation.
Laura is a pioneer of collaborative journalism, building an investigative journalism team that specializes in data analysis and research to tell compelling stories that would otherwise go untold – then sharing that reporting with other media outlets to reach the widest public possible.
A Denver native who spent 20 years reporting for newspapers, radio and public television around the country, Laura specialized in investigative reporting and data analysis. She came back to Denver to work as an investigative reporter at Rocky Mountain News. She has trained hundreds of journalists for more than a dozen media organizations. Laura was a founding member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, a network of more than 200 nonprofit investigative and public service news organizations nationwide, and now serves as its board chair. Her work has won awards in both broadcast and print, and has inspired the public to make changes in laws and lives, including spurring the release innocent people from prison, protecting abused children and winning aid for sick nuclear-weapons workers.Mark HorvitBoard Director -- Mark Horvit is an associate professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, where he teaches investigative reporting and is director of the State Government Reporting Program. He previously served as executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting, where he conducted training in investigative reporting and data journalism throughout the world. Horvit worked as a reporter and editor for 20 years before joining IRE. He serves on the boards of the National Freedom of Information Coalition and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.Anne GallowayINN Member Representative -- Anne Galloway is the founder and editor of INN-member VTDigger.org and executive director of the nonprofit Vermont Journalism Trust. VTDigger, based in Montpelier, VT, is dedicated to watchdog coverage of state government, politics, education, business, energy, health care, the environment and criminal justice. Sixty-five percent of VTDigger’s revenues come from sustainable sources. In 2015, the organization has a 13-member staff, 150,000 unique readers a month and a budget of $1 million. VTDigger has received funding from the Knight Foundation, Sunlight Foundation, Ben & Jerry’s Foundation and J-Lab. Galloway previously worked as a reporter and editor in Vermont for 20 years. She was the editor of the Sunday Rutland Herald and Barre Times Argus from 2004 until January 2009, when she was handed a pink slip along with 16 other employees. For many years, Galloway was a contributing writer for Seven Days Newspaper in Burlington. Her reporting has appeared in the New York Times (the Vows column), the New York Daily News, Vermont Life and City Pages (Minneapolis).Sheila KrumholzINN Member Representative -- As executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, Sheila Krumholz is the nonpartisan watchdog group’s chief administrator and spokesperson, and is cited frequently in prominent national media outlets. Sheila became Executive Director in 2006, prior to which she was CRP’s research director for eight years, supervising data analysis for CRP’s website, OpenSecrets.org, and for CRP’s partners and clients in the media, academia and elsewhere. Sheila has testified before Congress and the Federal Election Commission on issues related to government transparency and regularly makes presentations to scholars, government officials, NGOs that conduct research and advocacy, and at meetings of professional news organizations. During her tenure, she has grown the organization to a 20-person staff with 7 million unique visitors to its OpenSecrets.org website and 30,000 media citations in 2016.Marcia ParkerSecretary and INN Member Representative -- Marcia Parker is publisher and chief operating officer of CALmatters, a nonprofit journalism organization covering California politics, policies and personalities. Prior to joining CALmatters she was executive director of content and audience engagement for Penton’s Technology news portfolio. She previously was editorial programming and audience development director at State.com, a global opinion platform, and was West Coast editorial director of Patch.com, AOL’s venture into hyperlocal journalism. Parker taught at and was assistant dean at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism for several years, and then joined the nonprofit Center for Investigative Reporting in Berkeley. She served as launch manager for the website of California Watch, CIR’s statewide investigative reporting unit. Previously she did stints at AOL, where she was a director of programming, and was assistant managing editor at Intuit’s quicken.com, then the leading personal finance website.Norberto Santana Jr.INN Member Representative -- Norberto Santana Jr., is an award-winning investigative reporter with 20 years of experience at major daily newspapers. Before founding Voice of Orange County in 2009, Santana was a lead investigative reporter for the Orange County Register and spent a decade covering local governments across Southern California with newspapers such as the San Diego Union Tribune and the San Bernardino County Sun. He also worked as a staff writer with Congressional Quarterly in Washington, D.C. and covered territorial government with the U.S. Virgin Islands Daily News. In addition to his experience as a journalist, the Southern California native has a master’s in Latin American Studies and has worked as an elections analyst with the National Endowment for Democracy. He also has direct experience on Internet start-ups as one of the founders of CubaNet.org, a website for dissident writers inside Cuba that has operated since 1995. As publisher of Voice of Orange County, Santana has worked on numerous aspects of building a startup civic newsroom including recruiting and retaining diverse staff, board members, foundations and distribution partnerships. Over the past six years, Voice of Orange County has published nearly 6,000 stories, created a following of roughly 50,000 monthly unique visitors, successfully led two public records lawsuits and reached the $500,000 budget mark. The newsroom employs a half dozen reporters and editors and is expanding this year with a membership, sponsorship and events program.Nancy WestINN Member Representative -- Nancy West founded the nonprofit New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism almost three years ago and is the executive editor of its website InDepthNH.org, with a mission to hold government accountable and give voice to marginalized people, places and ideas. West has won many awards for government, business and investigative reporting over the years. Much of her reporting over the years has focused on the criminal justice system, child abuse and mental health. She started out with very little money and InDepthNH.org has steadily gained readers and respect and is now on the verge of figuring out how to bring in enough money to pay people and grow. The need is great here in this news desert. West is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. She is a mother and grandmother and is passionate about always telling truth to power and then hoping for the best.Neal ShapiroPublic Seat -- Shapiro is president and chief executive officer of New York public media provider WNET. Before coming to WNET, Shapiro was president of NBC News from June 2001 to September 2005, where he oversaw the global operations of NBC Universal’s top-ranked news division: "Today" in the morning, "NBC Nightly News" in the evening and "Meet the Press" on Sunday morning. From 1993 to 2001, Shapiro was executive producer of "Dateline NBC." Before NBC, Shapiro spent 13 years at ABC News, where he produced for all the network’s news programs and worked with Peter Jennings, Diane Sawyer, Ted Koppel and Sam Donaldson, among others. Shapiro has won 34 Emmys, 31 Edward R. Murrow Awards, nine Sigma Delta Chi Awards, three Alfred I DuPont-Columbia University Silver Batons, three George Foster Peabody Awards, three George Polk Awards, three Overseas Press Club Awards and many more. Shapiro graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University with degrees in history and political science. He has taught journalism at Tufts and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and has lectured at many universities, including MIT and Stanford.Bruce TheriaultPublic Seat -- Theriault has been a senior executive in local, state, and national public media organizations for nearly four decades. Until May 2016, Theriault was senior vice president, journalism and radio for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, where he led initiatives to encourage, fund and build stronger local, regional and national public media journalism through collaborations and partnerships. Previously, as co-managing director of Public Media Co. Theriault worked with public radio stations to expand their services through creative partnerships, acquisitions and finance strategies. Theriault also helped develop and launch Marketplace and Public Radio International’s The World while SVP of PRI and managed KTOO-FM and KRBD-FM in Alaska, where he co-founded and served as president of Alaska Public Radio Network and launched Alaska News Nightly, the first statewide daily news program for public radio. Theriault helped establish and then served as chair of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB). Currently, he is president of Bolder Strategies, a strategic management consulting firm to nonprofit public media organizations. Theriault holds the degree of master in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School. In his spare time he enjoys mountaineering and road biking.Hsiu Mei WongPublic Seat -- Wong is a member of the Management Group at PA Consulting Group, a global consulting, technology and innovation firm. She has over 20 years’ experience in planning, developing and managing complex initiatives in the financial services, healthcare, consumer goods and media sectors. She uses cross-industry insights to drive business and operating model innovation. She has a unique perspective on these industries having worked in North America, Australia, China, Thailand, Singapore, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Germany and the UK. Wong has worked with many Fortune 100 companies to advise and deliver major transformation, develop new revenue streams, set direction for digital initiatives and deliver business improvement projects. Wong’s previous work includes helping to launch CampingRoadTrip.com and a five-year stint at the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ). She is based in New York.Brant HoustonBoard Chair Emeritus -- Houston is a co-founder of the Institute for Nonprofit News, which began with 27 member organizations in 2009. He also has been active for the last seven years in supporting many INN member organizations as they start up, providing organizational, fundraising and editorial advice. Houston is a professor and Knight Chair of Investigative Reporting at the College of Media at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he oversees an award-winning newsroom. Houston previously served for more than a decade as the executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), a 5,000-member organization. Before joining IRE, he was an investigative reporter at U.S. daily newspapers for 17 years. Houston has authored four editions of “Computer-Assisted Reporting: A Practical Guide” and co-authored the fourth and fifth editions of “The Investigative Reporter’s Handbook.” He has taught investigative and computer-assisted reporting in 25 countries, and he is co-founder of the Global Investigative Journalism Network.INN Staff & LeadershipSue CrossExecutive Director and CEO -- Sue Cross is executive director and CEO of the Institute for Nonprofit News, a network of more than 250 independent, nonprofit news media organizations in North America. She joined INN in 2015 to build its emerging media network and advance social enterprise models for investigative and other public service journalism. She is a former senior vice president for the Associated Press global news agency, where she created digital news services, expanded Spanish language and Latin American operations, introduced video to more than a thousand online news sites and managed a national news cooperative. She previously served as a regional vice president, AP’s Los Angeles bureau chief and directed news coverage and media operations in Chicago, Phoenix and Dallas. She began her career as a reporter in Alaska and Ohio. Cross also has worked in nonprofit business development, network-building and social enterprise consulting. She serves on boards including Stanford University’s John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships and EdSource, a California education media and research nonprofit, and on the National Advisory Council for the Emma Bowen Foundation. She is a graduate of Ohio State University. Cross lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter.Fran ScarlettChief Knowledge Officer -- Fran Scarlett is INN’s chief knowledge officer and business coach. She specializes in helping organizations understand and leverage their value propositions to build business models that maximize their potential for revenue growth and long term sustainability.
Most recently Fran served as the regional director of the Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She was responsible for starting businesses, growing capital investment and creating jobs in Southeastern North Carolina. Prior to that, she ran her own management consulting firm, Scarlett Ink Media, providing strategic and tactical consulting to news media organizations with an emphasis on developing new revenue models; product development and cross-platform collaborations.
Before consulting, Scarlett spent ten years at The Plain Dealer in the advertising division. In her role, she worked closely with the news division in content development to grow incremental revenue. During her tenure she created and served as the general manager of the custom publishing group with responsibility for editorial, sales and operations.
Scarlett received her MBA from Harvard University and a B.S. in Mass Communications from Boston University. Sara ShahriariDirector of Leadership and Talent Development -- Sara Shahriari helps nonprofit newsrooms develop effective and forward-thinking leaders who advance the industry in both journalism and financial sustainability. That means supporting emerging leaders through training that strengthens their organizations while also building pathways into the nonprofit news world for diverse groups of talented students and industry professionals in journalism, public administration and business.
Sara’s professional background includes managing a statewide public radio network, hosting and producing an award-winning public affairs program, serving on the faculty at the Missouri School of Journalism and reporting extensively from Bolivia for outlets including the Guardian, Bloomberg News and The Christian Science Monitor.
Sara earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree from the Missouri School of Journalism. She wholeheartedly believes in INN’s work to support meaningful and sustainable independent journalism in an age of drastically shrinking local and investigative coverage, and she is committed to working with present and future leaders as they build inclusive, excellent and financially sustainable nonprofit news organizations.Mara JeziorMembership & Development Coordinator -- Mara Jezior is INN’s membership and development coordinator. She is responsible for managing and helping to build INN’s growing member community.
Prior to joining INN in July 2017, Mara held marketing and development internships at the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism and MinnPost, two of INN’s earliest members. As the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism’s first public engagement and marketing intern, she tracked the reach and impact of individual stories, producing reports for funders and created the Center’s first stakeholders report. During her time at MinnPost, she honed her skills using databases and donor prospecting.
Mara graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015 with a B.A. in journalism and history, and served as managing editor of UW-Madison’s independent student newspaper, The Daily Cardinal. There, she wrote and received her first grant, which awarded the newspaper $5,000 to support the coverage of under-reported topics on campus during a time when ad revenue was dwindling and the newspaper was seeking new revenue streams. She lives in Minneapolis.Chip PottsDirector, Finance & Operations -- Nonprofit finance executive Chip Potts is director of finance and operations, supporting the growth of the INN membership network, overseeing INN's fiscal sponsorship program and expanding the portfolio of business services and benefits for INN members.
Potts previously was the associate director and CFO of the Santa Monica College Foundation. He has more than 30 years of accounting experience, starting with a Washington CPA firm that specialized in audit reporting for nonprofit organizations and government contracting. He ran his own accounting and tax practice for 12 years in Arlington, Virginia before moving to California and joining the college foundation nine years ago.
Potts brings INN and network members broad nonprofit experience in volunteer fundraising, board participation and civic leadership. In addition to his CFO position, Potts served as acting director of the college foundation for nearly two years and volunteered for organizations including The Design Industry Foundation for AIDS (DiFFA), Whitman Walker Clinic AIDS Walk, Food and Friends' annual gala "Chef's Best.” He was a 10-year member of the Board of Directors for Florence Crittenton Services of Greater Washington, an organization serving at-risk girls and teenage mothers.
Potts has a B.S.B.A in accounting from Wheeling Jesuit University and in 2012 received his Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Sector Management from the California State University Northridge (CSUN). He has completed CSUN course work for a Master's in Public Administration.
He is based at INN's Los Angeles office.Nikita AdvaniEmma Bowen Foundation Intern -- Nikita Advani is an Emma Bowen Foundation intern studying accounting at the University of Southern California (USC). She also serves as the president of the Residential Housing Association at USC. When she isn’t found in class, work, or studying, she enjoys learning new tricks in Excel and cooking for her roommates.Cynthia RuizOffice Administrator and Executive Assistant -- Cynthia serves as INN’s office administrator and executive assistant. With more than 15 years of nonprofit administration experience, Cynthia is equal parts admin and equal parts jack of all trades — depending on project and office priority. Before joining INN, Cynthia worked closely with keratoconus patients for the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California Irvine.
Cynthia is actively pursuing a BA in Sociology and Masters in Social Work, with a concentration on strengthening, empowering and rebuilding under-resourced communities.Beverly YoungCommunications Assistant -- Beverly Young is INN’s part-time communications assistant based out of INN’s headquarters in Los Angeles, where she assists with digital communications and special web projects for INN and its members. She previously supported INN on its Index project, an important bench-marking survey that gauges the status of the nonprofit news industry and INN membership.
She has worked at several other digital media projects including the USC Annenberg Knight Digital Media Center, Michele’s List, and the RFCUNY Entrepreneurial Journalism Network. She is also the digital media coordinator at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.
Beverly is an avid nature photographer and is passionate about environmental sustainability. As a student, she received a photography award from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges. She is a graduate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in communication and a minor in marketing management.Lawrence HorneDevelopment Director -- Lawrence Horne is INN’s Development Director, working with senior leadership and the Board of Directors to expand major gifts and foundation support for INN and its members. He brings more than 30 years of experience in fundraising and nonprofit management to the position, including senior positions at the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC), The Public Theater, the Trust for Public Land, AIDS Service Center NYC, and the Hedrick-Martin Institute.
In addition to his work with the National Coalition Against Censorship, Horne's media involvement has included programming consulting work for KCET, a Los Angeles PBS station, and the Independent Television Service (ITVS) and producing documentary films.
Horne began his nonprofit and fundraising career as the founder and executive director of Outfest, the Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival, which he grew into a leading film festival during his 15-year tenure. Most recently, he was the senior capital campaign director at the Green-Wood Historic Fund, and prior to that position, he was the executive director of the American Friends of Blérancourt supporting the Franco-American Museum, Château de Blérancourt in Picardy, France.
His educational background is in French and cinema studies, having pursued graduate work at UCLA in French film history and the Sorbonne (Paris IV) in French literature, and teaching film history in the French Department at UCLA. Horne has translated articles and books on art, architecture, and film from French into English.Roz HunterGrants Officer -- Roz Hunter is a development and communications strategist and grant writer specializing in nonprofit journalism. Most recently she served as Deputy Director of Type Media Center (formerly The Nation Institute) and has previously held positions at The Nation magazine and International House Philadelphia. Hunter received an undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. in Women's History from Sarah Lawrence College. She lives in New York City.Jonathan KealingChief Network Officer -- As INN’s chief network officer, Jonathan Kealing strengthens collaboration among INN’s network of nonprofit newsrooms and develops partnerships and services that help them meet their missions and increase the impact of their journalism. Kealing leads the Amplify Project among Midwest newsrooms piloting news sharing and distribution models. He is especially interested in ways local and regional news organizations can work together and with national organizations to extend the impact of their journalism.
Before joining INN, Kealing was part of the executive leadership team at Public Radio International, serving as executive editor for PRI.org. Kealing led a team of 15 journalists covering global issues including immigration, gender equity and international security. He also made four trips to China to teach mid-career Chinese journalists about U.S. digital media trends.
Kealing previously worked for The World Company and its Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World. There he helped launch innovative community news sites focused on health and sustainability. He also led efforts to cross-train reporters and photographers for a digital-first, multiplatform environment.
Kealing has spoken at many national and regional journalism conferences, including the Online News Conference, and is a graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife, two kids and their dog.Sharon McGowanAmplify Collaborations Leader -- Sharon McGowan is the Amplify Collaborations Leader at the Institute for Nonprofit News, working with members throughout the Midwest on collaborative resources and coverage of public affairs issues that span the region. McGowan was the founding editor of Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, an award-winning nonprofit news organization that has covered low-income, minority communities in Milwaukee’s central city since 2011.
She started her career as a reporter and then managing editor at The Chicago Reporter, which covers race and poverty. McGowan was assistant news director/managing editor at WBBM-AM Radio and later became Assignment Manager at WBBM-TV, both in Chicago. She was an adjunct faculty member in journalism at Northwestern University for more than 20 years and was most recently on the journalism faculty at the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University.
McGowan earned her bachelor’s degree at Washington University in St. Louis and her master’s degree at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. McGowan and her husband, Jim, have two adult children and are based in the Chicago area.Sarah VasselloAudience Development Specialist -- Sarah Vassello is the Audience Development Specialist for the Amplify News Project, focusing on magnifying and tracking impact of stories from the Midwest. She's especially interested in helping newsrooms develop relationships with their audiences and connecting excellent stories to new audiences.
Before joining INN in February 2018, Sarah served as an interactive entertainment intern at The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and as a market engagement intern with Gannett, where she collaborated with publications in more than 100 markets to provide technical, website and newsroom support. She also provided network-wide support on watchdog projects, like a database to track special interest group influence on national and statewide politics, and has experience analyzing engagement data using website metrics, social metrics and data visualization.
A 2017 UNC-Chapel Hill grad with a B.A. in multimedia journalism and political science, she also worked for The Daily Tar Heel, a top-ranked independent student-run newspaper, where she rose from staff writer to launching and directing the entertainment and culture vertical.Kay LimaDirector, INN Labs -- Kay leads a team of news technologists at the Institute for Nonprofit News, a fast-growing network of nearly 200 public service news organizations. She identifies and builds innovative solutions for independent news publishers to better engage with the public, strengthen revenue sources, and build trust. The team she directs build products which help newsrooms with their digital presentations of news.
Kay brings her experience in digital marketing, project management, and creative strategy to INN. She leverages this experience to lead trainings and digital innovations for over 70 publisher sites and news organizations each year.Paola BaradelloAccount Director -- Paola specializes in helping organizations understand how to optimize their online and digital media presence. As INN Labs' account director, Paola works closely with our growing number of INN members and clients to identify solutions and leverage the INN Labs publishing tools.
Before joining INN, Paola served as an account director for five years at a large distributed global demand generation agency. She was responsible for managing key global accounts as well as assisting in project management, execution, and strategic direction. Prior to that, Paola held various positions in digital and online product marketing.
Paola has her undergraduate degree from UC San Diego and a dual MBA from the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, Spain and Arizona State University.Ben KeithLead Developer -- Ben Keith is a web developer who solves journalism problems through WordPress. He started at INN in 2014 as an apprentice and returned to INN full-time in 2015.
As INN Labs’ lead developer, Ben oversees the Largo publishing platform and creation and maintenance of our publishing tools and plugins. He also contributes to editorial projects for our members and is highly skilled in WordPress theme development, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, and database work.
Ben has given talks at WordCamp Columbus, WordCamp for Publishers, SRCCON, and the Ohio State University Open Source Club and Collegiate Web Developers Club, and has led training sessions for INN members. He holds an undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University.Miranda KrapfProject Manager -- Miranda Krapf has joined INN Labs as a project manager, responsible for client-facing communications, management of project scopes, timelines, and successful deliveries.
Krapf previously held positions as project manager and business analyst at the University of Minnesota, where she developed experience in web and digital project management, particularly for nonprofit organizations. In her previous role, she managed technology projects for scientific research labs, academic technology initiatives, a wide variety of web and digital projects, and extensive freelance web development. Krapf is skilled in all aspects of scoping, planning, implementing and reviewing technology and web-related projects and has years of hands-on WordPress experience.
Krapf graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Environmental Science and minors in Geographic Information Systems, Sustainability Studies, and Atmospheric Chemistry. She also holds certifications and awards for project management, agile development, business analysis, and leadership.Josh DarbySenior Developer -- Josh Darby serves as a lead solutions architect of INN Labs’ publishing tools, WordPress framework, and large-scale projects, ensuring they reflect and meet industry and client goals.
Darby previously held senior developer positions at The Penny Hoarder, one of the largest personal finance websites in the country, and at web development agencies where he worked on high-traffic projects for nonprofits, universities, and companies such as Disney, FOX, and Cisco.
Darby's full-stack expertise includes WordPress development, PHP, MySQL, Javascript, and Python and is experienced in understanding client needs and implementing development best practices.
