Thousands of Maryland students are making the greatest social impact they can for their favorite causes by teaming up to start a social venture or a philanthropic project for an existing nonprofit (including volunteering and fundraising)... The Do Good Challenge is a year-long effort that engages more than 1,000 students across campus and partners with numerous colleges, schools, and programs. Capped by an eight-week competition created by UMD students to encourage their peers to Do Good, the challenge awards more than $20,000 of total prize money and gives students a chance to get their organization’s name in front of a panel of high-profile judges and hundreds of supporters and professionals at the Finals. It is an opportunity students can’t miss. Yet training and leadership development has not kept pace with such growth, demand, and opportunity. In fact, most professionals working in the philanthropic and nonprofit sector have scant education training in leadership and management. Today, a growing number of individuals are interested in a career in this field. The School's Master in Public Policy (MPP) degree and joint MPP/MBA degree with a specialization and focus in Nonprofit Management and Leadership forms the paradigm for the work we described above and will be developing in the coming year at the undergraduate level. Our graduate program currently offers a specialization (five or more courses) and focus (three courses) in Nonprofit Management and Leadership in which every course includes an applied project with an actual nonprofit organization.
