McCann and his family began visiting Hilton Head Island in the early 1980s and owned a timeshare before settling in Port Royal Plantation in 1999. He offers Hilton Head Island more than four decades of business, marketing and finance experience. Since fully retiring to Hilton Head Island in 2003, he has spent five years as a director – three as president – on the Port Royal Plantation Landowners Board; six years – two as chairman – on the town’s Parks and Recreation Commission; he is the Former Chairman for the Board of Directors of the Technical College of the Lowcountry Foundation, and he now serves on Town Council for Hilton Head Island. John J. McCann started on Wall Street as a clerk, beginning a career in the financial industry that would send him around the world and to top executive positions. He retired in 2003 as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bridge Trading, a Reuters Company. He has supervised thousands of employees and managed the construction of multiple facilities that included the headquarters of Lynch Jones and Ryan, in the country’s second-largest private office building – 55 Water Street in New York. McCann holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Thomas Edison State University in Trenton, N.J. He also served as an adjunct instructor for 11 years at the New York Institute of Finance, and was appointed a securities industry arbitrator & frequent expert witness for legal actions involving financial services firms. McCann spent years as a volunteer baseball and basketball coach for underprivileged and handicapped children, and he helped create and teach innovative high school courses on fundamentals of the financial services industry. McCann is an avid baseball fan, traveler and beach walker. He and his wife, Valerie, have five grown children. McCann has been a member of Hilton Head Island Town Council since November of 2012. I won a board consensus that resulted in an open discussion of the issue, and as result we were able to retain a quality town manager. That process worked.
