The Board includes representatives of the research community, higher education, foundations, early childhood education, and the K-12 system. The diversity of Board members' backgrounds helps ensure that the Institute is fully aware of issues associated with literacy across the lifespan and can benefit from knowledge resident throughout the field of education. The National Institute for Literacy Advisory Board (Board) accomplishes its purpose by providing advice on Institute activities through quarterly in-person meetings, committee meetings, and regular telephone and email contact with the Institute's Director and Interagency Governing Group. Having sustained advice from a knowledgeable group is critical to the success of these projects. The diverse backgrounds of the Institute's Board also ensures that the Institute does not leave out a segment of the literacy community in its plans and strengthens its ties to all groups that can benefit from its work.
