John has performed extensive writing and research on a range of political and national security issues related to U.S. policy in East Asia, to include Chinese propaganda and influence efforts, military-civil fusion efforts within the People’s Liberation Army, and patterns in military coercion efforts directed against Taiwan. He is a proficient Mandarin linguist, who has performed extensive original research in indigenous Chinese language sources.John holds an M.A. in National Security Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and a Master of International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins-SAIS.</Description></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Person"><Name>Katherine Schultz</Name><Description>Research Associate ~ Katherine (Katerina) Schultz is the research associate at GTI. In the past, Katherine was an intern at the Czech branch of UN Global Compact and Europeum, an EU-centered think tank. She also interned at the Consular Section of the Czech Embassy in London. In 2017, Katherine was awarded the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship which allowed her to complete a 9-month Mandarin Chinese language program in Taiwan. Katherine is currently an M.A. Candidate at the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University. She focuses her studies on cross-Strait relations and East Asian international affairs and security. She received a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from Charles University in Prague. In his junior year in college, he served as a student journalist covering stories on gender equality in Taiwan. Jack is currently an M.A. candidate at the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University, with concentrations in both International Security Studies and International Development. He received his B.A. in Journalism and Communication Studies from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. His interests include global media and the role of media in a post-conflict setting, as well as gender equality and LGBTQ rights in Taiwan. He has also worked as an office assistant at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. Prior to moving to Washington, DC, he served as an English instructor in Taipei, Taiwan, where he lived for just under a year. Marshall is currently an M.A. candidate at the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University, where he focuses on US foreign policy in East Asia. He received his B.A. in History and International Relations from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to GTI, Ms. Chang was senior program specialist in the China Program at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), where she examined China’s role in global conflict zones spanning from the Indo-Pacific region to the Middle East and Africa. Ms. Chang joined USIP after working as a researcher at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., and the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. She also covered Taiwanese politics and society as a reporter for The China Post in Taipei.Ms. Chang has also published widely on Chinese foreign and security policy, Asia-Middle East relations, China’s relations with Pakistan and Afghanistan, civil wars, ethnic conflicts, and religious freedom. She has written for several publications including Foreign Policy, The Jamestown Foundation’s China Brief, Jadaliyya, Middle East Research and Information Project, ISLAMiCommentary, and the Middle East Institute’s Middle East-Asia Project. Ms. Chang wrote a book chapter on “Chinese Policies on the Arab Uprisings” in Popular Unrest and Foreign Policy: The International Politics of the Arab Spring (Palgrave Macmillan, December 2014), and is currently working on another book chapter examining Chinese perspectives on the Yemen war. Ms. Chang holds two Master’s degrees in International Relations and Journalism from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Michael Cole</Name><Description>Senior Non-Resident Fellow ~ J. Michael Cole is a Taipei-based policy analyst. He is a senior non-resident fellow with GTI; senior non-resident fellow with the Taiwan Studies Programme at the University of Nottingham, UK; research associate with the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China; chief editor of Taiwan Sentinel; and assistant coordinator for the Forum 2000’s China working group. From 2014-2016, he was an employee of the Thinking Taiwan Foundation, a think tank founded by Tsai Ing-wen where he was chief editor of Thinking Taiwan. He was deputy news chief and a columnist/reporter at the Taipei Times from 2006-2013. Prior to relocating to Taiwan in 2005, he was an intelligence officer with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in Ottawa. He has a master’s degree in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada. His work has appeared in a variety of publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, South China Morning Post, Christian Science Monitor, Globe and Mail, Lowy Interpreter, National Interest, China Brief, the Age, Jane’s Defence Weekly, CNN, Brookings Taiwan-US Quarterly, and others. He is a regular commentator on Al Jazeera, BBC News, CNN, and others, and is a consultant for various governments and the defense industry. He is the author of five books about Taiwan. The latest, Convergence or Conflict in the Taiwan Strait, was published by Routledge in late 2016.</Description></Stakeholder><Stakeholder StakeholderTypeType="Person"><Name>Michael Mazza</Name><Description>Senior Non-Resident Fellow ~ Michael Mazza is a senior non-resident fellow at GTI. He is also a visiting fellow in foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he analyzes U.S. defense policy in the Asia-Pacific region, Chinese military modernization, cross-Strait relations, Korean Peninsula security, and U.S. strategy in Southeast Asia. Mr. Mazza has contributed to numerous AEI studies on Asian security issues. He specializes in macroeconomic issues as well as issues on foreign investment, trade, and technology.Riley has appeared on national television and radio extensively. He is the senior Korea/China strategist at the US Air Force’s Checkmate Directorate, where he provides USAF and Department of Defense leadership with expertise on DPRK/PRC military capabilities, political leadership, strategic culture, and Great Power competition.Mr. Chan was previously the China, Korea, Philippines, and Vietnam Country Director at the Secretary of the Air Force, International Affairs. In this role, Mr. Chan was responsible for USAF engagement with the Chinese Air Force, and for directing engagement/Foreign Military Sales with key allies and partners, with a portfolio in excess of $100 million. Mr. Chan has also served as an analyst in Headquarters Air Force, A10 (Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration), providing expertise on PRC nuclear doctrine.Mr. Chan has published widely on Chinese influence operations/information warfare, Taiwan military reform, military diplomacy with the PLA, and the strategic balance in East Asia.
